What is the difference between detox tea and a cleanse?

The words ‘detox’ and ‘cleanse’ pop up a lot these days, especially with summer on the horizon!

These two terms are often used interchangeably, and many people don’t really know one from the other.

So, you might be surprised to learn that detoxes and cleanses are actually quite different from one another! And it’s very important to know what that difference is.

Much of the marketing around both cleansing and detoxing is the elimination of toxins. “Toxins” is the term used to describe any kind of substances that may negatively affect your health. These can include pollutants, synthetic chemicals, heavy metals, food additives, plastics, pesticides, and any other harmful chemical.
In a nutshell, toxins are unwelcome particles that can stay in your body, irritating cells, causing inflammation, and interfering with your body’s normal functions.

Signs that your body is overloaded with toxins:

  • Fatigue or low energy levels
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Joint pain
  • Low mood or depression
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia or other sleeping problems
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Skin irritations or acne

What is a cleanse?

A cleanse could be described as “single-level” elimination because it focuses mainly on the digestive tract. A cleanse programme is designed to remove waste on a superficial level from the colon. This usually involves a variety of supplements or other formulas such as laxatives, diuretics, vitamins, minerals, teas, and so on. Each of these helps to stimulate your digestive system and encourage your body to eliminate waste.

Part of a ‘cleanse’ may also include a specific diet. This usually means eating lighter foods that help to speed up the digestive system, while avoiding any potentially irritating or allergenic foods.

What is a detox?

Detox programmes differ from cleanses in that they don’t just focus on the digestive system. Instead, they’re designed to support most or all of your body’s natural detoxifying organs and processes.

Your body’s main detoxing centers are your liver and the kidneys, so a good detox programme should focus on optimising the function of these two organs. This means nutritional support through diet, supplements, herbs, hydration, and lifestyle changes.

A detox tea is usually made up of specific herbs that are known to enhance the function of your body’s detoxifying organs.

So, which one is right for you?

Why cleanses aren’t the best option

The idea of cleanses is often very appealing. Many popular brands that you see on Instagram or Facebook claim that their ‘cleanse’ will help you lose weight and flush out impurities. Some cleanse products can even make you believe that it’s healthy to restrict your diet or take herbs that make you go to the bathroom a lot.

Unfortunately, this isn’t how the human body works!

The problem with cleanses is that they won’t actually cleanse you. They may make you poop more, but that’s only temporary.  There’s no such thing as a ‘quick fix’ for losing weight: any weight you do lose you’ll probably gain right back.

You see, water weight isn’t the same as body weight. Your body stores excess carbohydrates in your muscles and liver in the form of glycogen. Each gram of glycogen is bound to up to four times its weight in water.

When your body is trying to function on a calorie deficit – which is usually the case on a cleanse – your body simply taps into its reserves of glycogen. All of the water that’s bound to your glycogen is released in your urine. This means you might see the number of scales go down – but not for long. As soon as you return to your normal diet, your body will also return to its previous weight.

So, a cleanse can just mean you are very stressed, hungry, and grumpy for a week!

You see, your body is actually designed to eliminate waste naturally, all by itself. Every time you go to the bathroom, every time you sweat, and even when you breathe, your body is detoxifying. There’s no need to take laxatives or follow a special diet to do that unless your detoxifying organs have been compromised in some way.

A detox should be a gentle, healthy process that enhances your body’s natural detoxification pathways rather than forcing them to work harder than they are able to.

When should you use a detox tea?

The work of detoxifying is primarily done by your liver and your kidneys. As long as they’re in good health, they will keep on filtering out waste and toxins that you encounter every day.

Of course, sometimes these organs are not as efficient as they could be. Although your liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system are constantly working to flush out harmful compounds, these organs sometimes struggle to deal with the enormous number of toxins in our diet and environment.

If you constantly suffer from bloating, indigestion, brain fog, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, aching joints, sore muscles or other such unpleasant symptoms, a gentle detox in the form of a herbal tea could be very beneficial.

A detox tea is no ordinary tea. For a start, it’s not as intense as a standard detox programme. Detox teas are simply natural formulas made with specific herbs that help your liver, kidneys, and other detoxification organs to carry out their daily functions more efficiently.
